For many entrepreneurs, new to starting a business, the days are jam-packed with a list of “to-dos” and often one doesn’t get to plan too far ahead because 5 out of the 12 things on today’s to-do list went sideways, things got delayed and you had to pivot in a different temporary direction. Does this sound like you?
You thought about your business, you made the business plan, you opened shop… and then everything started to happen at once and you had to wear ALL the “hats”. You find yourself putting in 12 and 18 hour days and while you LOVE what you do, you still feel a bit overwhelmed.
The fact is, you have a hard time getting time to plan ahead.
There’s an old sales saying that goes something like this, “When’s the best time to plant a tree? The answer is 20 years ago.” This analogy is often used to help owners realize that they needed to have planned ahead for the tree they want NOW. However, we all know it’s quite impossible to grow a tree overnight, just like it’s impossible to get your business where you want it to be overnight. If often takes a strategy of planning including MARKETING.
Appreciate the NOW, and also plan for the FUTURE
I LOVE the summer, and being that it just recently (finally) got warm and sunny, it feels a little odd to start thinking about the fall football season. My son played football and my daughter cheers. While he just graduated, she is headed into her senior year and recently made the comment, “I can’t wait for football season!” I understand her excitement, but at the same time, I want to live here in the moment of summer. Here’s the thing, though. If she didn’t practice the cheers and stunts, and exercise her body over the summer… she’d be hurting come the fall. Just like my son practiced during the summer and went to camps to improve skills, if he hadn’t, he wouldn’t have been ready for the fall season.

My point in sharing that is while we like to live in the here and now and yes, savor the present moments… as a business owner, you’ve GOT to be thinking ahead and planning for the next quarter and the next year.
Large corporations often plan with ease as they are continually watching the bottom line, and forecasting with hopes of keeping the stockholders happy and making decisions on where expenses need to be cut even if it means cutting a long-time employee’s job. But YOU, dear friend, are classified as a small business and while you want to remain profitable, you care just as much for your staff as you do that bottom line. YOU, can pivot far quicker than any large corporation and YOU have a ton of advantages like not having to answer to a board and being the sole decision maker. Yet, while that is a positive, you also have a negative… YOU are often the one doing it all, and/or having to delegate specific things to others. And again, while you are wearing all the “hats” of business, you don’t get the proper time to plan and to come up with next quarter’s marketing strategy.
